#1 Anatomy review
The newborn skull is comprised of 5 major bones:
Frontal (2)
Parietal (2)
Occipital (1)
At birth, the bones of the skull are not fused which allows the head to mold and the brain to expand and grow. Normally, sutures form at the junction of the bones. Sutures are made up of flexible materials that can expand. Suture can be narrow, open, or prematurely fused (a condition called craniosynostosis which we will talk about below). The diagram below shows the bones and sutures of the newborn skull. Look for the location of these sutures going from the front of the head to the back:
