Parents bring in their 3-week-old daughter with the following concerns: she is slow to feed and seems to be constipated. She is sleeping through the night. They are delighted about that but, after talking with friends, wonder if that is normal. They report she often needs to be awakened to feed. Recently she seems to feel chilly all the time and is so sleepy. The doctors in the hospital where she was born told them she looked good.

The family moved here from another state the week after she was born due to the father’s job. She is formula feeding, the mother did not wish to breastfeed.

You suspect congenital hypothyroidism.
