When I examine a newborn, each little ear has a bunch of things to check out:

  • Pits

  • Tags

  • Pinna (position and shape)

  • Hole

  • Behind

Do you know what this is called?

It’s a lop ear! More on this below.

Pits

A pit is a little teeny-tweeny hole next to or near the pinna. Always check for a pit. If you see one, be sure a hearing screen is performed.
